Last week, the Standard Club held its annual Latin American Forum at the Caesar Park Hotel in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro.
Standard Club underwriters and claims executives made an introduction to the Club, the many risks and liabilities it covers, its key financial standing and its membership. Guest speaker Douglas Martin of Smit Salvage went through a realistic casualty scenario concerning the wreck removal of a cable laying ship in the busy Rio de Janeiro’s Guanabara Bay.
Executives from the Club’s offshore division provided an insight into the poolable and non-poolable covers available by the Standard Club to specialist operations. Finally, Godofredo Mendes Vianna, partner of Kincaid law firm, gave an overview of wreck removal contracts and regimes under Brazilian legislation.

The event was attended by ship owners and operators, brokers, lawyers, surveyors and other professionals engaged in the shipping and offshore industries in South America and was followed by drinks and canapes overlooking the famous Ipanema Beach. Some of SAPIC‘s members (portraited in the picture above) also participated.
