Travel ban extended to visitors from South Africa

To slow the new COVID-19 variant’s spread, the Brazilian government issued Ordinance 652 that maintains the prohibition on entry of all non-resident foreigners by land and sea.

The updated regulation keeps the ban of entry of non-resident citizens arriving on flights departing or passing through the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and adds flights from the Republic of South Africa to the list.

The travel restrictions do not apply to:

• Brazilian nationals and foreign residents
• Foreign professional on a mission at the service of an international organisation
• Foreign employee accredited to the Brazilian government
• Foreign spouse, partner, son, father or curator of a Brazilian national
• Foreign nationals whose entry is explicitly authorised by the Brazilian government in the public interest or for humanitarian reasons
• Bearer of the National Migration Registry

The above travellers who arrive from or pass by the UK and South Africa in the last 14 days, must remain in quarantine for 14 days when entering Brazil.

Seafarers arriving to work aboard ships and platforms in Brazilian waters are also exempted from the ban providing they meet the appropriate migratory requirements to their seafaring status, including having an entry visa when one is required.

Failure to comply with the restrictions may lead to civil, administrative and criminal liabilities, including removal measures and disqualification for asylum or refuge in Brazil.

Ordinance 651 of 8 January 2021 has been revoked.
