The prestigious colloquium and general assembly of the CMI will take place in Rio in May 2026, and registration is now open
The Brazilian Association of Maritime Law (ABDM) will host the international meeting of the Comité Maritime International (CMI) in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro from 12 to 15 May 2026. This event marks a significant milestone as it represents only the third occasion in CMI’s 128-year history that the assembly has taken place in South America.
Founded in 1897 in Antwerp, the CMI is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation committed to the unification of maritime law. Its membership comprises individual experts and national maritime law associations, including the ABDM. The CMI serves as a crucial independent expert advisory body to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). The CMI has maintained a close collaborative relationship with the IMO since 1967, stemming from the grounding of the oil tanker TORREY CANYON off the Southwestern coast of England. It played a pivotal role in the drafting of the International Convention on Civil Liability for Oil Pollution Damage by the IMO in 1969 (CLC 1969).
The 2026 CMI Colloquium and General Assembly will be hosted at the Windsor Barra Hotel, nestled in the picturesque neighbourhood of Barra da Tijuca. The event is anticipated to attract approximately 400 participants from Brazil and around the globe, along with 70 distinguished speakers.
